Initial Basic Training (I.B.T.)

I.B.T. comprises 4 modules for categories AM and A1. For Categories A2 and A, it comprises modules 1, 3 and 5, through what is called now the " Direct Access",  as of January 19th, 2013. For full license individuals willing to upgrade their status from either Category A1 to A2 or A2 to A, there is now what is called the " Progressive " course which will require the individual to take Module 5 only. Categories AM and A1 will require the IBT course  to be delivered at a minimum of 16 hours. However IBT for Categories A2 and A require a minimum of 18 hours to be delivered. The student will have to show, at the end of each module, knowledge and competence, before being allowed to proceed to the next module. Once courses are sucessfully completed, students will be awarded a Certificate that will have to be carried along with the appropriate permit for the category, at all times. Permits and Certificates are only valid within the Republic of Ireland and restricted to secondary and primary roads where the speed limit does "NOT" go over 100 kilometers per hour.

Street Smarts

I.B.T. is over and you finally have your official permit to ride on most Irish roads.  This is the time when assistance and further training from a motorcycle instructor is most needed.

The instructor will expose you to different riding circumstances and apply rules of the road in a safe manner.
By learning positioning and observation in all situations, you will achieve the level of preparedness you will need for your full license exam. This program should take 4 to 6 hours to be delivered. For some individuals, it could take longer depending on their skill and safety knowledge.
